Hurricane Harvey Rebuilding Efforts

On August 25th, Category 4 Hurricane Harvey made landfall between Port Aransas and Port O’Connor, in Texas. The storm began off the African coast in early August, Harvey formed into a tropical storm on August 17th, gaining the attention of the national media.

Harvey was the first major hurricane to hit the United States since Hurricane Wilma in 2005. In a short 56 hours the storm became a Category 4 hurricane, which included top wind gusts of 132 mph over Port Aransas with sustained wind speeds of 110 mph.

50+ inches of rain poured down over the greater Houston area, breaking all previous city rainfall records. As a consequence of the immense rainfall, Port Lavaca experienced a water level rise of 6.71 feet. Harvey is possibly the strongest hurricane to reach landfall since September of 1961, when Hurricane Carla struck the area.

Hurricane Harvey Damage Assessment

Harvey was reportedly accountable for insured losses up to $10 billion. CoreLogic performed an analysis of the damage from Harvey and estimated that nearly 200,000 homes in Texas were at risk of the storm surge and rising water damage and can equate to a near $40 billion dollars in reconstruction value.

Fortune magazine says, “Texas Governor Greg Abbott estimated damage from Hurricane Harvey at $150 billion to $180 billion, calling it more costly than epic Hurricanes Katrina or Sandy, which devastated New Orleans in 2005 and New York City in 2012.”
Repairing this disaster is going to require a combined effort experts, industry wide.
